HgbA1c fact or fiction

Hey everyone! Remember me??? I used to post on this blog before the minutiae of life whisked me away. I have a patient in the hospital that I checked a HgbA1c. It came back at 20.8. That is definitely a record if it is a true measurement. Anyone know what the average blood sugar for a person with a HgbA1c of 20.8 would have?

Extrapolating from a table I found which only goes up to 12% it would be 625. I think DMK and I are (I guess WERE by now) on the record board for one that was in the upper teens. I don't remember the exact number but I do know the man is now dead.

Scott used a formula today that says that the average blood sugar would be about 580. I really think this lab report was in error.

Is my record being replaced or not? What was it?

I think mine was around 17. Did you repeat the lab for verification?
