Hawaiian spider
This is a Hawaiian garden spider I saw in Kona. The "gold back" was very impressive. It makes a large X on its web.

The CC is a "club" founded by a small group of medical professionals, who have made a pastime of turning medical cases and discussions into medically irrelevant history lessons, philosophical rants, and displays of one-upsmanship. The official premise, since the "club" was named, has been to exchange and discuss various books, movies, and ideas. Sometimes we eat sushi.

On March 22,2011, we saw one in a tree next to the King Kam. Hotel in Kilua Kona. I thought it was practical joke because the spider's back wasn't just gold colored, it looked like it was covered in gold foil.And the X was too perfect. But under magnication it clear that the X was woven into the web.I checked back two hours later and the X was badly damaged. Got good pics.
