Bed Blocker
From WordSpy, my word of the day is bed blocker. Of course I don't really worry about this too much lately, but it makes me think that some of you could pull a derivative definition from this, like 'inpatient service blocker' or 'lockdown room blocker' or even 'ER bed blocker' which typically later becomes a bed blocker, service blocker, or lockdown room blocker for some poor intern.

Also known as a ROCK, as you know interns have occasionally "polished a rock" --to keep around and inflate their service numbers. Of course a rock is a nice person who requires little or no care. Contrary to a GOMER orignially GET OUT OF MY ER("House of God")which now is a generic sick old person usually with family from Flint, Mich. or anywhere in Indiana.
