The irrational yet irrestible urge to know or make known. The CC is a "club" founded by a small group of medical professionals, who have made a pastime of turning medical cases and discussions into medically irrelevant history lessons, philosophical rants, and displays of one-upsmanship. The official premise, since the "club" was named, has been to exchange and discuss various books, movies, and ideas. Sometimes we eat sushi.

HgbA1c fact or fiction
Hey everyone! Remember me??? I used to post on this blog before the minutiae of life whisked me away. I have a patient in the hospital that I checked a HgbA1c. It came back at 20.8. That is definitely a record if it is a true measurement. Anyone know what the average blood sugar for a person with a HgbA1c of 20.8 would have?
Extrapolating from a table I found which only goes up to 12% it would be 625. I think DMK and I are (I guess WERE by now) on the record board for one that was in the upper teens. I don't remember the exact number but I do know the man is now dead.
ReplyDeleteScott used a formula today that says that the average blood sugar would be about 580. I really think this lab report was in error.
ReplyDeleteIs my record being replaced or not? What was it?
ReplyDeleteA current third year, KS, had the previous past highest A1c: 18.
ReplyDeleteI think mine was around 17. Did you repeat the lab for verification?
