Jump the shark

I learned a new wordspy word/ phrase and sure enough it is in Wordspy. Check it out---if you don't know the meaning. I would be interested in how many know the meaning before checking Wordspy.

I hope we haven't "jumped the shark" with the blog.

TV-Turnoff Week

April 25-May 1 is TV-Turnoff Week. I'm not sure if that is supposed to include internet and the like. I can do without the tv but probably not internet.

Bed Blocker

From WordSpy, my word of the day is bed blocker. Of course I don't really worry about this too much lately, but it makes me think that some of you could pull a derivative definition from this, like 'inpatient service blocker' or 'lockdown room blocker' or even 'ER bed blocker' which typically later becomes a bed blocker, service blocker, or lockdown room blocker for some poor intern.

Too Much Coffee?

This fifty year old Farmer came to me a few months ago complaining of this swelling in his left elbow which was initially painful and he noticed after bumping his elbow 2 times and doing some unusually heavy lifting with that arm 2-3 weeks earlier. It is now only minimally tender and not warm or red. After I told Joe about my recent case of olecranon bursitis, he said his problem was that he drank too much coffee. Why would that be? (Joe this is obviously not for you to answer until someone else gets a stab at it)

Album of the Week: Big Audio Dynamite II - The Globe

This is one of my favorite CD's to pull out of the collection from time to time. First of all, it reminds me of my college days which was when it came out. A couple of songs like Rush and The Globe hit the mainstream during that time, but they are all very interesting. One bit of info about this band that I like to share when I get the chance is that the main man behind B.A.D. was Mick Jones, who had previously been a member of The Clash (Here is the story). Their music has good deal of techno/dance influence which was appealing to me back in the day, but now when I listen, aside from the memory lane bit, I find something else amusing; Right in the middle of the second song, Can't Wait/Live, they sample a quote from Shakespeare [Henry VII, Part III, II.v.21]
O God! methinks it were a happy life,
To be no better than a homely swain;
To sit upon a hill, as I do now,
To carve out dials, quaintly, point by point,
Thereby to see the minutes how they run,
How many make the hour full complete;
How many hours bring about the day;
How many days will finish up the year;
How many years a mortal man may live.

Now I'm not a big Shakespeare fan but you have to give to a rock band that introduce you to quality material like this.

Rash in a 16 Month Old

This little sixteen month old boy presents today with a 1 day history of a worsening rash. He started amoxicillin 8 days ago for Bilateral Otitis Media. He is otherwise healthy and has no history of drug allergies and has previously taken amoxicillin uneventfully. He has been a little more cranky over the last day but otherwise is acting fairly well. He is afebrile and vital signs are normal. What do you think? Any questions?

Bluegrass
The First and so far only entry, my own Orange Blossom Special

Orange Blossom Special

Orange Blossom Special, composed by Ervin Rouse(see liner notes) and Chubby Wise, is my song of the weekend. I was first introduced to the Johnny Cash version when I was in college and I bought a Best of Johnny Cash Tape. It is one of my favorite Cash songs. His version is slower than other versions but it contains some amazing harmonica and saxaphone solos. The next version, I found on a CD called Appalachian Stomp: Bluegrass Classics, performed by the Stanley Brothers. It is much harder and faster with some insane fiddling. The last of my favorite versions of this song is part of a two-song combo by Blueground Undergrass, called Red Haired Boy/Orange Blossom Spatial. This is from the Album, Live at the Variety Playhouse Atlanta, GA 7/10/99. In looking around on the internet, one reviewer informed me that some refer to their music as "Hick Hop". This is a 15 minute jamboree that gets me out of my seat in a hurry. While the Red Haired Boy portion of this song is some of the most beautiful music I have ever heard, it's the Orange Blossom Spatial part where the band really goes off. By the way I did spell Spatial correctly as the band put their own spin on it. Also I did have the opportunity to see these guys play in Little Rock at Juanita's several years ago. It was excellent.
Another version by Roy Clark on this site plays automatically when you CLICK HERE (if you just click once here, this is it) and there is a MIDI version at this site.

Coming Soon: The CC's Sunday Symphonia

I am proud to introduce a new item to the blog: The CC's Sunday Symphonia! On Sunday I will make a post discussing some good or interesting music I heard over the weekend. If you are a member of the CC, you may also make a post and I will automatically reference it. If you are a visitor (I know you are out there), and you have blogged about a band, a musician, an album, or a concert you have listened to over the weekend or find interesting, leave a link in the comments section of my reminder (which will come around Friday) and I will add it to the post. I will make this a regular event if I can get anyone other than Joe or myself to take even the slightest interest.

HgbA1c fact or fiction

Hey everyone! Remember me??? I used to post on this blog before the minutiae of life whisked me away. I have a patient in the hospital that I checked a HgbA1c. It came back at 20.8. That is definitely a record if it is a true measurement. Anyone know what the average blood sugar for a person with a HgbA1c of 20.8 would have?

Virtuous Cycle

Now here is a phrase I like. I ran across this one at Word Spy. Virtuous Cycle is a play on vicious cycle but has the opposite meaning: One good thing leads to another. I am going to do my best to bring this word into my vocabulary, but I am afraid that I won't have the occasion to use this term as often as I use 'vicious cycle'.

Alternative similar phrase: virtuous circle

Irregardless

Now this is a word that really irritates me. I'm not intentionally trying to pick on you Joe (this time), for your recent use of this ridiculous word because so many people use it. I was really surprised to see the Yahoo dictionary take such a damning stance on the use of this word (click here), though I wholly agree. I will sum it up: People use it when they are trying to sound proper, despite "the logical absurdity of combining the negative ir- prefix and -less suffix in a single term". I'm sure my concern means nothing to the phonically challenged Simethicorn, who derives his his own sense of identity, from his aptitude for muddling the medium through which we communicate.

The Phrenology Story

On my recent trip to NYC I saw the phrenologist's model in the window of a fortune teller, and took the picture. Not until I examined the photo in detail did I notice the similarity of the model and the man waiting for his fortune to be told or his head to be examined.

One of the two is NOT that you are supposed to read my mind (although I do like this thought and see where you might come to that conclusion). You did get one(the shining domes).

By the way MY family thinks the photo is great and worthy of publication(not just the blog).

And let it be known we are not finished with the phrenology model, I am thinking we may embrace this old art in our alternative medicine course.
